UK watchdog explains reasons for not acting in defense ministry Afghan data breach

( July 17, 2025, 16:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Information Commissioner made a judgment call based on resource allocation when deciding not to take enforcement action against the Ministry of Defence after it divulged the personal details of nearly 19,000 Afghans linked to helping UK military efforts. In a blog post, John Edwards said his office ensured the causes were identified and rectified and lessons were learned. The ICO fined the MoD for a similar but much smaller incident while it investigated this one. Edwards said the ministry’s mitigations for the breach come at significant cost to the public and the classified nature of the investigation meant only cleared staff could work on it, keeping them away from “other important work.”Blog post follows:...
